Four Seasons Ko Olina and beach in front

As someone who has traveled to Hawaii over 15 times, and planned an Oahu family vacation may times, I’m often asked about the best resorts in Oahu for families. The good news is that Oahy is very family friendly and there are so many kid-friendly resorts perfect for your Hawaiian vacation.

We love Hawaii and visit it every year as it’s one of the most beautiful locations in the world. Plus, there’s so much to do for families.

While all the islands are unique in some way, Oahu is definitely a special location. Known for its stunning beaches, delicious food, and tons of family-friendly activities, it’s a popular tropical vacation destination. It’s also a good place to start for your first visit to Hawaii. It’s also where Honolulu is located.

We have been to Oahu many times with kids of all ages. It has so much to do for kids, from toddlers to teens, and everything in between, you won’t be bored. But where should you stay when you visit Oahu with kids?

As we’ve stayed in many family hotels and Oahu resorts, I’ve created a list of the absolute best places to stay in Oahu.

If you like to be near a lot of things to do on Oahu, you may be looking to stay in the Waikiki beach area, which has a lot of walkable restaurants, beaches, and shopping and is near attractions like the Honolulu Zoo. Other families prefer the quiet of the North Shore or the Ko’ Olina areas, where there are still some things to do, but it is a much more relaxed and laid-back experience. Either way, this list has it all!

Read on for a list of some of the best family resorts in Oahu. To find out where on the island they are located, scroll to the bottom for the map.

The Best Resorts in Oahu for Families

Our family has stayed in several parts of the island. Often, we will spend a few days near Waikiki Beach, somewhere like the Hilton Hawaiian Village or Sheraton Waikiki, so that we are close to the activities of that side of the island. Then, we like to spend a few days near Ko’Olina, where we can access the North Shore or some of the more relaxed experiences on Oahu – even just enjoy resort and beach time.

The best Oahu family resorts have great amenities, activities the whole family will love, and comfortable accommodations. Each one on this list ticks all three boxes and makes a great place to stay on your Oahu family vacation.

Turtle Bay Resort

Turtle Bay Resort

Located in the famed North Shore part of Oahu – known for Haleiwa Town and popular with surfers (especially in the winter) – Turtle Bay Resort has five miles of gorgeous natural coastline on the North Shore and 12 miles of beautiful trails for outdoor adventures. With a total of 1,300 lush green acres, the property is one of the largest resorts in Oahu.

Turtle Bay appeals to honeymooners and families, which shows you just how amazing this resort is, with activities couples and families enjoy. You can spend the day at the pool or beach and watch sunsets in the evening.  It is a great resort for families looking to be removed from the crowds of Waikiki.

Amenities and Activities

While there’s no kids club at the Turtle Bay Resort, which may be a big con for you, there are still plenty of things to do with children at Turtle Bay Resort. There are two outdoor pools, including an infinity pool, a separate pool for the villas, and one for the main resort. There are also two hot tubs and a splash pool for kids. It also has a great beach for kids.

Activities include:

Hilton Hawaiian Village

Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach

I think this is one of the best Oahu family resorts in Waikiki Beach. The Hilton Hawaiian Village is much more than a place to stay, with 22 sprawling acres right on the edge of Waikiki; it’s one of the biggest Hilton hotels in the world.

Tropical flowers and lush gardens cover the Hilton Hawaiian Village Resort property. It even has a saltwater lagoon. I think it’s one of the best Oahu resorts because it truly represents the spirit of Aloha and has daily activities that allow you to experience the local Hawaiian culture.

Amenities and Activities

The kids won’t get bored here with everything this resort offers. He Hilton Hawaiian Village Waikiki Beach Resort is full of family-friendly activities, such as:

  • Five swimming pools and multiple water slides – Paradise Pool and 10,000 square foot Super Pool

Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort & Spa

This Waikiki Beach Resort has been remodeled recently, has many modern amenities, and is located next to Diamond Head Crater, a popular Hawaiian tourist attraction. It has the new Queensbreak amenity deck, which is one of the largest outdoor entertainment spots on Waikiki Beach.

Many of the rooms have private lanais where you can smell and feel the ocean breezes. It’s also located close to popular Oahu attractions like the Honolulu Zoo, Pearl Harbor, and the Waikiki Aquarium. This resort is also a popular wedding destination because of its natural beauty and entertainment spaces.

If I would give a negative to this resort, it is that you have to cross the street to get to the beach. And, Waikiki is very busy. But for anyone interested being in the heart of Waikiki and within walking distance to some attractions, restaurants and shopping, it’s a great choice.

Amenities and Activities

Waikiki Beach Marriott Resort has plenty of fun things to do in Oahu for families, including:

  • Pฤสปina Waikฤซkฤซ – The Luau at Waikiki Beach, where you can experience a traditional Hawaiian luau

Aulani Disney Resort

This Disney resort is one of our favorite Oahu family hotels and resorts. If you love all things Disney, this Disney Vacation Club resort in Hawaii is one of the best kid-friendly resorts in Oahu. Not only will you get a unique Disney adventure, but you’ll also get to experience the spirit of Aloha.

The Aulani Disney Resort and Spa is located in the peaceful and quiet Ko Olina, Hawai’i, on Oahu, and everything caters to families, including the amenities. Not only does it have a lazy river, but it also has two waterslides that empty right into it! My kids loved it!

The nice thing is that staying at the Aulani Disney Resort is not your typical theme park vacation – it’s all about the Disney Hawaiian experience. You will find it has many of the thoughtful amenities common with Disney, and you can meet and greet characters onsite. But, it is definitely an Oahu hotel families love.

Amenities and Activities

The Aulani Disney Resort and Spa is one of the best kid-friendly Oahu resorts. You can book a spa day at the Laniwai while the kids play at Aunty’s Beach House, the kids club. It has incredible kids’ programming tucked away in a uniquely themed activity center right at this wonderful family resort. And it has one of the best Hawaiian beaches in Oahu.

There are plenty of things to do for the entire family at the pools, splash zones, and other parts of the waterpark. It’s perfect for younger children to play. The resort offers other activities, including:

  • The Ka Maka Grotto with an infinity pool
  • Menehune Bridge

Aston Waikiki Beach Tower

The Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel is another one of the best family hotels and resorts in Oahu and is located across from Kuhio Beach Park and Waikiki Beach. It’s also located on the same side of Oahu as Diamond Head, so you can experience the magnificent views without all the people.

Plus, some of the most popular activities and local dining spots are close. The Aston Waikiki Beach Hotel is also a 4-diamond, AAA resort that combines condominium living with amazing resort-quality service and amenities.

Amenities and Activities

It’s close to many local activities, such as:

  • The Royal Hawaiian Center
  • Pearl Harbor
  • Honolulu Museum of Art
  • Kapiolani Community College Farmers’ Market
  • Diamondhead State Monument
  • Shopping at Waikele Premium Outlets
  • Honolulu Zoo
  • Waikiki Aquarium
  • Kapiolani Park

And much more. The resort itself has fun things to do for everyone that make it one of the best family resorts, like:

  • A large pool
  • A barbecue area
  • Hospitality Lounge
  • Fitness Center
  • Deck Seating
  • Poolside cabanas
  • Hula lessons
  • Lei-Making lessons
  • Yoga classes
  • Ukulele lessons

As you can see, most of the activities center around things you can do locally instead of things to do at the hotel itself. So, if you’re looking for more on-site activities, this may not be one of the best Oahu resorts for you, but it is a great Hawaiian resort.

All of the suites/condos come with fully-equipped kitchens, so you can easily eat most of your meals in. But if you want to eat out, you’ll have to leave the property and head to one of the local restaurants.

Accommodations

The nice thing about these Aston Waikiki Tower suites is each one has ocean-front floor-to-ceiling windows, and there are only four suites per floor, making it much quieter and private. So, if you’re looking for a more tranquil location, this is one of the most peaceful places to stay in Oahu for families.

Sheraton Waikiki

The Sheraton Waikiki is another one of the best family resorts located in the heart of Waikiki. We enjoyed this hotel on our last visit to Oahu. It’s only a few miles from Diamond Head Crater and just a few steps away from the beautiful Ala Mona Beach.

The Sheraton Waikiki is a huge hotel that’s 32 stories high with 1,600 rooms. It shares a pool with one of the other kid-friendly resorts in Waikiki, The Royal Hawaiian.

The central location means you’re close to many shops, restaurants, and activities, giving you easy access to everything. And here’s a secret – you will pay far less to stay here than at the Royal Hawaiian next door.

Amenities and Activities

There are many fun things to do here for families, such as:

  • Poppins Keiki Waikiki Kids Club for kids ages 3 to 12.
  • Adults-only infinity pool
  • Helumoa Pool, a large pool area, interactive fountain, and water slide for families (the pool is one of the largest in Waikiki and was voted one of the best hotel pools in the U.S. by USA Today in 2019.)
  • A shallow pool for toddlers and young kids
  • Surf lessons
  • Hula lessons
  • Ukulele lessons
  • Flower-Lei making
  • A spa

There are a few great places to eat on the property; the beachfront RumFire restaurant, Edge of Waikiki poolside bar, Kai Market, Lawson Station, and The Cookie Corner.

Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club

The Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club is another one of the best resorts in Oahu for families because it spans over 640 acres and was designed so you can fully experience the spirit of Oahu culture.

The resort feels less hectic and crowded where it’s located. With multiple pools and beachfront access, it’s no wonder this pristine location is a favorite place to stay in Oahu for families.

There is one drawback, and that’s how far away from Waikiki the Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club is located, and some of the local restaurants and shops. The other thing is that some tour companies won’t pick up in Ko’Olina for day activities, but you can check with the concierge for recommendations on which companies will pick up or rent a car.

But the beaches in this area are ideal for kids as they are calm. And, it is less crowded than Waikiki.

Amenities and Activities

You’ll find plenty of fun things to do at the Marriott Ko Olina Beach Club, including:

  • Three heated lagoon-style pools with water slides, waterfalls, caves, and hot tubs
  • The Keiki Club (kids club) for kids 5 to 12 years old – There are activities just for kids, like mermaid story time and swimming with a mermaid.

  • Golf
  • Charter a sail or fishing boat at the resort’s full-service marina.
  • Nature trails for hiking
  • A luxurious spa
  • Swim activities
  • Fia Fia Polynesian Dinner Show, where you can experience traditional Hawaiian music, food, and more
  • Wet n’ Wild Hawaii waterpark is close by

You’ll also find a few great places to eat right on site – Longboards Bar & Grill, Longhi’s Restaurant (features Italian cuisine), and The Marketplace. Also, note that there is no resort fee, which is quite unusual for Hawaii.

Accommodations

The resort has penthouse guest rooms, spacious villas, and luxury rooms. Our family loves that many rooms have kitchenettes, and the villas have multiple bedrooms and full kitchens.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is Oahu good for a family vacation? Why Should We Vacation In Oahu?

Yes, Oahu is excellent for a family vacation.

Oahu is referred to as “The Gathering Place,” or The Heart of Hawaii, because the majority of Hawaii’s population lives there. It’s also where Honolulu is and the famous surf town of North Shore, Oahu.

There are plenty of things to do in Oahu with kids, with activities even small children will enjoy. That’s what makes it one of the best Hawaiian islands to visit and even one of the top spring break destinations for families.

But it is one of the busier and more crowded islands with both Honolulu and Waikiki. It’s one of the most visited Hawaiian islands because of attractions like Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona Memorial. Though traffic can be a little crazy, it’s still one of the best places to stay, surf, and enjoy all Hawaii has to offer and I always tell people it’s a great “first island” to visit if you’ve never been to Hawaii before.

There are so many things to do in Oahu that kids of all ages love, from toddlers to teens. Some of the best things to do in Oahu with kids include:

  • Visiting Waimea Valley and swimming in one of the sacred waterfalls
  • Learning about Polynesian culture at the Polynesian Cultural Center
  • Visiting Pearl Harbor
  • Taking surf lessons and visiting the famous Haleiwa surf town
  • Kualoa Ranch for horseback riding, movie tours, and raptor tours
  • Enjoying one of the best beaches and snorkeling at Hanauma Bay
  • Learning about Hawaiian culture with lei making, storytelling, Ukulele lessons, hula lessons, or enjoying an authentic Hawaiian luau
  • Custom Circle Island Tour

Check out my post on 101+ Things To Do in Oahu With Kids for tons of ideas for activities for kids of all ages. It can help you plan a detailed Oahu itinerary complete with something for all members of the family.

Is Turtle Bay Beach good for kids?

As you can tell from this post, I definitely put Turtle Bay Resort at the top of my list for family resorts on Oahu, and one of the reasons is that Turtle Bay Beach is excellent for kids. It is calm, quiet, and perfect for families with kids. Kulima Cove is a protected bay and one of the best beaches for kids in Oahu and in Hawaii. This Oahu resort is located on the North Shore of Oahu, which also makes it less busy and great for families looking for a more relaxed Hawaiian vacation.

Can you do all-inclusive in Hawaii? Does Hawaii have all-inclusive resorts with food and drink included?

There aren’t traditional all-inclusive resorts in Hawaii like you might see in the Caribbean or in Mexico. But there are resorts that have so much going on that they can keep you busy for a full day or longer. There are also resorts that can help you if you are trying to do your family travel on a budget.

Aulani and Hilton Grand Vacations, as well as some Marriotts, have rooms with kitchenettes and full-sized kitchens and laundry, which can help save you money if you are traveling on a budget. Finally, there are also VRBOs or Air BnBs you can look at as well.

How many days in Oahu with family?

You can do Oahu for three to four days if you are planning to island hop. But because there are so many things to do in Oahu, I recommend seven days if you have time for it because there is just so much to do for families.

Which side of Oahu has the best weather?

The southern side (Waikiki area) has the best weather year-round. This is one of the reasons this area became so popular for resorts and tourists.

Final Thoughts on Best Resorts in Oahu for Families

Now that you know some of the best Oahu resorts for families, are you ready to plan your dream Hawaiian vacation? If you’re looking for a genuine tropical vacation experience, you’ll love visiting Oahu with kids because there is so much to do.

Plus, it’s the perfect chance for the whole family to experience the Hawaiian culture in a whole new way. There’s a reason we go back to Hawaii every year; it provides a unique family vacation experience everyone will love.
